A sandwich takes eight to twelve minutes to eat. For that entire window, the customer is holding your printed paper, looking at it, and rotating it as they work through the build.

No other piece of packaging gets that. A box is opened and set aside. A cup gets glanced at. Sandwich wrap stays in the hand, in view, and increasingly in photographs. Which is why the print treatment on this sheet deserves more thought than its unit cost suggests.

Fold Memory Beats Barrier Strength

The instinct is to spec the heaviest, most grease-resistant sheet available. That is usually the wrong call.

Sandwich wrap needs to crease sharply and stay creased without tape. Heavy stock resists the fold and springs open in the bag. Lighter sheets in the 30 to 40gsm range take a fold cleanly and hold it, which is why most delis land there rather than reaching for a stiffer paper.

Strength matters less than pliability here, because the wrap is doing containment work rather than structural work.

The Soggy Bread Trade-Off

Here is the tension nobody mentions when selling wrap by barrier rating. A fully sealed sheet keeps grease in and steam in equally well. In a hot-pressed sandwich, the trapped moisture softens the crust within minutes.

So the right specification depends on your menu. Cold builds tolerate a tighter grease barrier. Hot-pressed items need a sheet that lets some vapor escape, or a wrap technique that leaves the ends open. Cutting Through the Wrap

Most counters wrap first and cut second, which means the blade passes through paper and sandwich together. A sheet that shreds or drags at the cut line produces a ragged edge and fibers on the food.

Cleanly cutting stock is a genuine specification difference, not a marketing claim, and it is worth testing on a physical sample with your own knife before committing to volume.

Where It Sits Against Deli Paper

These two are used interchangeably by many suppliers, and the overlap is real, but the jobs differ.

Custom Deli Paper is a counter material, interleaving slices, lining scales, and separating portions during prep. It is handled by staff. Sandwich paper is a customer-facing wrap built around fold retention and hand feel. Plenty of operations stock both and use them for different tasks.

Print Placement That Survives the Fold

The wrap gets folded twice and cut once, which means centered artwork frequently ends up hidden or bisected.

A repeating pattern solves this: your logo is tiled across the sheet so some instance always lands visible regardless of how it is folded. It also handles the cut line without losing meaning. Water-based food-safe inks are standard in 1-color, 2-color, or full CMYK, and a single bold color on natural kraft usually outperforms full color on white for this application.
