Cat Toy Hanger cards live on a peg hook, which is a harder environment than it looks. Shoppers lift, examine, and rehang the same card twenty times before it sells, and every one of those cycles pulls at the hang hole. An unreinforced tab tears out, the card ends up in a bin at the aisle end, and the sale is gone. We build these with reinforced hang tabs in euro slot, delta hook, or round hole formats, printed edge to edge on stock that holds a crease. Our retail packaging supplier team specs board weight against toy weight. Request free samples first.

Cat Toy Hanger Cards: Built for the Peg, Not the Shelf

Most of what we make in our pet packaging category sits on a shelf. A Cat Toy Hanger hangs from a hook, and that single difference changes every specification decision that follows: the board weight, the die, the print placement, and where the whole thing fails.

The Tear-Out Problem

Peg retail is a handling-heavy environment. A cat toy is an impulse buy, which means shoppers pick it up, turn it over, read the back, and hang it again. Repeat that across a few weeks, and the hang hole takes real cumulative stress.

Cardboard alone gives way at that point. The hole elongates, then splits toward the top edge, and the card either falls behind the fixture or gets pulled from the display by staff. Either way, the product stops being sellable while the toy inside is perfectly fine.

The fix is a reinforced tab, a clear adhesive strip applied over the hole area that distributes load across a wider area of the board. It costs very little per unit, and it is the single highest-return specification decision on this product.

Choosing the Right Hang Format

Retailers have opinions here, and getting it wrong means your product does not fit their fixtures.

  • Euro slot, the keyhole shape, is the most widely accepted format and the safe default when you are selling into multiple accounts.
  • Delta hook, a triangular cut-out, distributes load slightly better and suits heavier items.
  • A round hole is the simplest and cheapest and works fine for lightweight toys with a reinforced tab.
  • The sombrero slot combines a round hole with a slot below it, giving flexibility across different hook types.

Ask your buyer which fixtures take before you finalize the die. Changing it after tooling is a cost nobody plans for.

Catnip Loses Potency in the Open

This is the specification issue most cat toy brands underestimate.

Catnip’s active compound is volatile. Exposure to air, heat, and light degrades it steadily, so a toy sitting on a peg for three months in a bright store can be noticeably weaker than the same toy fresh from production. The customer takes it home, the cat ignores it, and the brand takes the blame.

Sealing the catnip element in a barrier layer behind the card protects potency across the retail window. For toys where catnip is the selling point, our foil and barrier pouch options handle that inner layer while the printed card does the merchandising.

Card Formats

  • Flat backer with blister: the toy sits in a clear, formed shell heat-sealed to the card. Full product visibility, strong tamper resistance.
  • Fold-over header card: the card folds over the top of a bag or pouch and is stapled or sealed. Cheapest option, ideal for soft toys and multipacks.
  • Skin pack: film drawn tightly over the product onto the card. Good for irregular shapes like feather wands.
  • Die-cut card with tuck slots: no plastic at all, with the toy held in cut slots. Increasingly popular for plastic-free positioning, it pairs well with brands already using our recycled and eco stock options.

Print Placement Around the Hook

The top strip of the card is occupied by the hang hole and reinforcement, so any logo placed there is partly obscured on the fixture.

Work your brand mark into the upper third but below the tab zone, keep mandatory copy and safety warnings on the reverse, and remember the card is seen at eye level in a row of near-identical competitors. Color blocking does more for shelf standout here than detail does.

Barcodes should sit on the back lower corner where scanning is easy, and applied barcode and batch labels keep your main print run consistent across SKUs.

Safety Copy Is Not Optional

Cat toys carry small parts, bells, and sometimes string or elastic. Where a choking or ingestion hazard exists, warning copy needs legible space on the card; plan for it at layout rather than squeezing it in at the proof stage.
